2. International Workshop: "The Avant-Garde and Its Networks: Surrealism in Paris,
North Africa and the Middle East from the 1930s", Orient-Institut Beirut, 14-15
November 2016
 
The workshop seeks to shed light on Surrealism as a political, social, literary and
artistic phenomenon that migrated beyond Europe and was translated into different
contexts. It focuses on international networks between Paris, Beirut, Cairo, and
other cities from North Africa to Iran. The question of how the reception of
artistic and literary ideas and practices has affected the concepts of Surrealism is
also addressed.

Visions, Desires, Movements in the Middle East and North Africa Today", SOAS,

What do the present and future look like at a time when young people's visions for
social justice, their aspirations towards socio-economic mobility and their projects
of self-determination and liberation have been betrayed by increased precariousness,
violence and surveillance? This question will be approached from three crucial
angles: political movements, apathy and mobility; vocabularies of change and
affectivity; 'wired communities' and friendship.

6. Academic Workshop: "Diasporas and Transitional Justice: Local, National, and

The workshop aims to explore the comparative dimension of diaspora mobilizations for
a wide range of transitional justice processes, and to analyze how diasporas'
embeddedness in different global locations impacts on such mobilizations in local,
national, and global politics. We are looking for papers from different world
regions, including the Middle East.

Centuries", Mediterranean Seminar, Madrid, 18-19 May 2017 
 
The purpose of this conference is to analyse from a pluri-disciplinar perspective,

to the decline of the Austria dynasty in the Iberian Peninsula and other

Cinema and Other Arts since Independence", Oregon State University, 26 June - 14

This institute will shed light on the significance of North African artistic
expressions in the literary, visual and musical arts with origins in Berber, Arabic
and European idioms; expressions that have adapted to modernity, postcolonialism,
the reality of globalism and advances of social media. The institute will bring
together leading scholars in North African studies and 25 college and university
teachers wishing to expand their coursework or research on contemporary North
Africa.
