On the basis of concrete empirical studies, the workshop seeks to investigate the
nexus between three different fields of knowledge production and diffusion in
today’s Europe: media, academic/intellectual and policy-making. The goal is to
examine the ways in which different scholarly traditions, journalistic cultures and
political interest (or disinterest) affect knowledge on the Middle East in different
parts of Europe.

This conference is organized as the culmination of a three year international
research project on political and social transformations in the Arab world. The
project uses survey-based research to explore comparatively the beliefs, values, and
behavior with respect to political and social transformations in seven Arab
countries (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, and Iraq).

Ababa University, 30 September - 1 October 2016
 
The effects of the war on the countries of Northeast Africa have not been studied
with as much depth.  Nevertheless, the available documentation clearly reveals that
the First World War indeed had an impact on the history of the region. This
conference aims to suggest an analysis of the conflict that focuses on three crucial
points: space, time and chronologies, and agency.

12. Conference: “Migrations and Borders in the 21st Century. The End of National
Cultures and Identities?”, University Grenoble Alpes, France, 12-14 October 2016
 
We plan to consider primarily the post-Cold-War decades but do not exclude phenomena
occurring prior to this seismic change. We will question the impact of migrations on
the host countries, on the family, and on major institutions. We will also question,
in return, the evolution of mentalities and practices among migrant groups and their
offspring as well as in their countries of origin.

Mediterranean and the Near East (ILC-CCHS), Madrid, 26-28 October 2016
 
Embracing the legacy of the two prior editions, this year’s aim is that of
recreating the space –imagined and many times built up – for dialogue, connection
and transition, creating a transversal and interdisciplinary forum for discussion
and reflection about the different intellectual, cultural and social manifestations
that took place in the Mediterranean from Antiquity until the Early Modern period.

Ali Shariati is well known in some parts of the Muslim world and among Shi’a
academics. In order to facilitate a greater understanding of his work and its

influence by reexamining, revisiting and re-theorizing some of his most important
