We especially encourage, and invite, paper proposals engaging with the
methodological questions involved in justifications for both traditional and
alternative perspectives on fiqhī (juristic) readings of matters related to the
status of non-Muslims in Islam.

3. Conference: “Environmental Challenges in the MENA Region: The Long Road from
Conflict to Cooperation”, School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), London,

There has been as yet no international conference dedicated to studying MENA’s
environmental sustainability in its entirety in recent years. We hope to bring
together climate and natural scientists and environmental engineers along with
social scientists and policy makers and practitioners to engage in urgent dialogue
to pave the road for future collaborations.

4. Conference: “Religious Identities in the Construction of Communal Khōjā
Historical Memory”, World Federation of KSIMC & Florida International University,
Paris, 1-2 November 2016
 
The conference will bring together interdisciplinary Anglophone and Francophone
scholars in the humanities, generally defined, to present and discuss the
development of Khōjā identity over the past three centuries among transnational
communities in South Asia, East Africa, Western Europe, and North America.

5. African Studies Association (ASA) Annual Meeting, Washington, DC, 1-3 December 2016
 
Northwestern University’s Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa
(ISITA) plans to sponsor two panels.  The first panel, “New Voices in the Study of
Islam in Africa,” is open to any presenter on any topic connected to the study of
Islam in Africa in the social sciences and/or humanities. ISITA is accepting
proposals for the title and scope of a second pre-organized sponsored panel.

6. Conference: “The ‘Dangerous Classes’ in the Middle East and North Africa”,
University of Oxford, 26 January 2017
 
This conference takes as its central theme the notion of the “dangerous classes” and
invites abstracts examining its explanatory power when applied to the Middle East
and North Africa in the period from around 1800 to the present.

Successful candidates will be expected to actively engage in research, supervise
graduate students, and take part in academic activity in addition to teaching
undergraduate and graduate courses.  Candidates must be qualified to teach in
Hebrew. Requirements: Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in one of the following fields of
African Studies: Study of Islam in Africa, History of the Horn of Africa, or History
