10. "Fragments of the oldest Quran manuscript found at the University of
Birmingham?" - Clarification by Muhammad Isa Waley, British Library

"Please note that none of those involved in the announcement about the Qur'an folios
in Birmingham are foolish enough to think of claiming that they are the earliest
surviving ones. The notion that we made such a claim comes from certain of the media
who are given to this kind of misrepresentation. It has given rise to indignation
and to condescending remarks from Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
The main point is that it now seems very likely that the earliest Hijazi survivals
are from the first hijri century rather than the second; and that some may date from
the first half of that century. Nobody is in a position to say which of the Hijazi
folios in San'a, Istanbul, Paris, London, Birmingham and elsewhere are the earliest,
and maybe nobody ever will be."
