Would like to invite you to the international conference on the subject of:
Islam and Muslims in the culture, literature and languages of the South Slavs
February 18th -19th, 2016

The first states of the South Slavs were established as early as in the IXth century. However, they failed to maintain their independence, as both external and internal destabilizing factors led to their significant weakening, which was used successfully in the XVth century by the Ottoman state. Only parts of the modern day territories of Croatia and Slovenia, which were included in the Kingdom of Hungary and the Habsburg Empire avoided the conquest. The Turkish rule over the South Slavic states contributed to the rise of Islam among Slavs. Islamization was not treated as a priority, however, and the main political agenda of Turkey was to reign over the conquered lands and to gain profits necessary for the maintenance of the Ottoman state. It was mainly peasants and the upper classes wishing to preserve their existing privileges who converted to Islam. Also many Catholics changed their confession due to ambition. This way they could be granted the highest state posts. The collapse of the Ottoman state and the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy not only contributed to the creation of new South Slavic states, but also resulted in the gradual release of the antagonisms between nations of the South, which eventually led to the break-up of Yugoslavia and then to the armed conflict in the late XXth century.
The thematic axis of the conference is the mutual influence of Islamic culture and the cultures of South Slavic countries, documented in folk and artistic literature, historical and linguistic

sources. We wish to define the notion of “culture” mainly in a distributive manner for the needs of the conference and emphasize the role of the history, literature, theatre and the cinema.
The conference includes the following thematic areas:
1. The South Slavs and the culture of Islam
2. Eastern Christianity and Islam. Religious polemics, conflicts and coexistence.
 3. The history of the relations of the Byzantine-Slavic world with Arabs, Turks and other Muslim ethnic groups.
4. Cultural stereotypes – the picture of a Muslim (Arab, Turk etc.) in the literature and art of the Balkan ethnoses and the depiction of an adherent of the Eastern Orthodox Church in the culture of Islam.
5. Mutual cultural influences – if and how the civilization of Islam enriched the culture of the Byzantine-Slavic circle and vice versa.
6. Slavic Muslims: Bosniaks, Goranis, Macedonian Muslims (Torbeš), Pomaks – in the culture, literature and language of the South Slavs.
 7. Non-Muslims under the Turkish rule (history, culture, language).
8. Socio-political issues of the Balkan Peninsula from a historic and contemporary perspective.

Deadlines: Topics and abstracts should be admitted by the 1st of December 2015 to the following email address: konferencjislam@gmail.com Conference languages: Polish, English and all Slavic languages The conference fee of 300 PLN includes the print of the post-conference materials without the costs of travel, accommodation and meals. International Scientific Conference
 „Minorities and Conflicts: Asian and African States in the Modern World” October 9-10, 2015 St. Petersburg, Russia On October 9-10, 2015
the Higher School of Economics – St. Petersburg

will host the international scientific conference “Minorities and Conflicts: Asian and African States in the Modern World”.
The organizers of the conference are the Centre for Asian and African Studies and the Department of Asian and African Studies at the Higher School of Economics – St. Petersburg.

The aim of the conference is to facilitate multi-disciplinary discussion of research experience, theoretical, methodological and empirical findings in the field of Asian and African minorities’ studies. In the increasingly globalizing world the destruction of the old patterns of governance happens faster than the development of the new ones. After the fall of the colonial system in the middle of the XX century newly independent Asian and African states faced a number of challenges. On one side, there was an urgent need for state-building, national identity construction, integration and modernization. On the other side, the high diversity of their populations resulted in the strive of minority groups for self-determination, equal rights and protection of their language and culture. These challenges have not been solved completely and up to date are sources of ethnic tensions and violent crises.
 In Asia and Africa, where the majority of states are demographically diverse, racial, ethnic, religious minority groups are often subjects of discrimination and participants of armed conflicts.
Such conflicts, being domestic in their nature, have a devastating impact not only on populations of host-countries, but also on neighboring states, regions and the whole international system by producing refugee flows and destabilizing international economy.
The theme of the conference “Minorities and Conflicts: Asian and African States in the Modern World” brings us to a wide range of questions:
What types of minority conflicts exist?
What are their causes?
What role does economy play in the majority-minority relations?
Why do some countries experience relative stability, while others suffer from protracted violent conflicts?
What policies regulate the status of ethnic and religious minorities in Asia and Africa?
What are the successful examples of such policies?
What role do international organizations and external states play in this type of domestic conflicts?
 When do domestic ethnic and religious conflicts become internationalized?

The following topics are planned to be discussed at the conference:
· Theoretical background, conceptual foundations and methodology of the studies that focus on ethnic, racial and religious minorities and related conflicts;
· History and current state of minorities in Asia and Africa, their involvement in political, social and economic sphere;
· Reasons and consequences of ethnic, religious and racial conflicts in the modern Asian and African states;
· Ways of conflict resolution and prevention;
· Role of international organizations and external states.
 If you would like to take part in the conference, please, send in your abstract (300 words) and a CV to edsoboleva@hse.ru by 1st of August 2015. The organizing committee will notify applicants about the results of papers’ selection no later than on 1 st of September 2015. The working languages of the conference are English and Russian.
