This conference aims to discuss the multifaceted dimension that religious discourses
are assuming in both contemporary Africa and Europe. It will question the
effectiveness of conventional understanding of religions in the political debate and
in the media, trying to deconstruct what seems  an essentialised understanding of
religions and thus to shed light on the many theological, social and existential
nuances that underpin contemporary religious narratives.

RÉSUMÉ
Cette journée d’étude s’attache à une double interrogation concernant la présence des images et leur visibilité dans l’espace ecclésial, à travers le croisement des sources textuelles et des œuvres. Deux critères sont retenus pour penser ces notions : la mobilité (le mouvement en général) et la fixité. Ils permettent de prendre en compte les multiples jeux d’échelles à l’œuvre dans ce lieu rituel qu’est l’église, impliquant des objets, des manuscrits, des dispositifs liturgiques, des gestes, des déplacements physiques, dialoguant avec un décor appliqué au corps même du monument, épousant le caractère immobile de l’architecture. L’interprétation de la visibilité de l’image et des dynamiques qui animent et structurent le lieu de culte ne peut se passer d’interroger parallèlement les textes liturgiques, monastiques, théologiques ou hagiographiques, afin de tenter de mettre en rapport le discours des sources avec le témoignage des œuvres.

Argumentaire

L’analyse des images dans l’espace ecclésial au Moyen Âge implique une large prise en compte du contexte monumental et rituel. Depuis les années 1980, la recherche a bénéficié de l’apport des études sur la liturgie pour en faire un aspect prééminent dans l’analyse et l’interprétation du décor. Les recherches se tournent aujourd’hui davantage vers la réception du figuré, suscitant des interrogations sur la visibilité des images et leur degré de lecture. Aussi bien pour l’Occident latin que pour Byzance, on tend à considérer la mise en scène du sacré à travers les interactions entre le monument, le rite, les objets, le décor et le récepteur. La question de la visibilité se pose différemment selon le « public » visé (clergé, moines, femmes, donateurs). Elle relève également de l’emplacement de l’image dans l’église, de sa hauteur, de son éclairage et de sa technique, impliquant des questionnements sur sa lisibilité et sa possible (ou impossible) intelligibilité. L’ensemble de ces considérations supposent d’appréhender la notion de « présence » de l’image, articulée à l’idée que celle-ci se justifie par l’économie symbolique du lieu, et non par la réception.

C’est dans une perspective comparée entre l’Occident médiéval et l’Orient byzantin, et dans une chronologie longue (de l’Antiquité tardive à la fin du Moyen Âge) que cette première rencontre inaugure le programme de recherche IMAGO-EIKΩN. Regards croisés sur l’image chrétienne médiévale entre Orient et Occident.

Απόγονος μιας κερκυραϊκής οικογένειας εμπόρων η οποία εγκαταστάθηκε στο Machreq το πρώτο ήμισυ του 18ου αι., ο Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki υπήρξε μία από τις μεγάλες μορφές της αραβικής πολιτιστικής Αναγέννησης (Nahda) οι οποίες, παρά την ελληνική καταγωγή και μόρφωσή τους, παραμένουν έως σήμερα απολύτως και αδίκως άγνωστες στην Ελλάδα.
Ιστορικός, μαθηματικός, γιατρός, μουσικός, μουσικοσυνθέτης και θεωρητικός της μουσικής, ο Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki επινόησε, μεταξύ άλλων, την συγκερασμένη διαίρεση της ανατολίτικης μουσικής κλίμακας σε 24 ¼ του τόνου, καθοριστική καινοτομία της οποίας η έκταση βρισκόταν στο επίκεντρο των συζητήσεων του περίφημου Κογκρέσου του Καΐρου που αφιερώθηκε στην ανατολίτικη μουσική το 1932.
Αφού τοποθετήσει τη συμβολή του Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki στο γενικότερο πλαίσιο της Nahda, η Basma Zerouali θα ενδιαφερθεί κυρίως για το έργο ενός εκ των πρώτων ιστορικών της νεότερης και σύγχρονης Συρίας, ακολουθώντας τις περιπλανήσεις του ίδιου και της οικογένειάς του μεταξύ Τρίπολης και Δαμασκού, Σιδώνας, Τύρου και Deir el-qamar, Άκρας και Καΐρου. Από τη μεριά του, ο Sylvain Perrot θα εξετάσει το έργο του θεωρητικού της μουσικής, αναζητώντας τις αρχαίες θεωρίες στις οποίες ο Mishaqa Petraki ενδεχομένως να είχε πρόσβαση, αφενός χάρη στη γνώση της αρχαίας ελληνικής και αφετέρου μέσω των Αράβων συγγραφέων οι οποίοι μετέφρασαν τα ελληνικά κείμενα και εισήγαγαν κάποια από τα στοιχεία τους στη δική τους αντίληψη του «απέραντου ωκεανού των ήχων» (Ibn-Khaldun).


Issu d’une famille de commerçants corfiotes installée au Machreq dans la première moitié du XVIIIe siècle, Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki fait partie des grandes figures de la Renaissance culturelle arabe (Nahda) qui, bien que possédant des origines et une culture grecques, demeurent jusqu’à aujourd’hui totalement et injustement méconnues en Grèce.
Historien, mathématicien, médecin, musicien, compositeur et théoricien de la musique, Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki est notamment l’auteur de la division tempérée de l’échelle musicale orientale en 24 ¼ de tons, innovation décisive dont la portée est au centre des débats du célèbre Congrès du Caire de 1932 consacré à la musique orientale.
Après avoir resitué la contribution de Mikhail Mishaqa Petraki dans le contexte général de laNahda, Basma Zerouali s’intéressera plus particulièrement à son œuvre d’historien, l’un des tous premiers de la Syrie moderne et contemporaine, en suivant ses pérégrinations, ainsi que celles de sa famille, entre Tripoli et Damas, Sidon, Tyr et Deir el-qamar, Acre et Le Caire. Sylvain Perrot se penchera quant à lui sur l’œuvre du théoricien de la musique, pour voir la place qu’y occupent les théories antiques, auxquelles Mishaqa Petraki a pu avoir accès, d’une part, par sa connaissance du grec ancien et, d’autre part, par l’intermédiaire des auteurs arabes qui ont traduit les textes grecs et en ont introduit certains éléments dans leur propre conception « du vaste océan des sons » (Ibn-Khaldun).
