Joint Annual Conference of BRISMES and EURAMES: "Liberation in the Middle East?",

Paper and panel proposals on any aspect of liberation and also on any other theme
are invited. We will include panels on as wide possible a range of disciplines,
including: politics, religious studies, history, law, economics, sociology,

5. International Conference: "Contemporary Arab World in the International
Relations", University of Gdansk, Poland, 4 July 2015 

The conference's methodological theme will be the SWOT analysis. During the
conference four workshops will be created: Strengths, Weakness, Opportunities and
Threats. Each of the workshops will be facing the problems of the Arabic region in
the XXI century.

6. Panel: "Governance Dynamics beyond Authoritarianism and Democracy", ECPR General
Conference, Université de Montréal,  26-29 August 2015

The panel aims to disentangle the convergence of governance by contrasting
governance dynamics from MENA states, Europe and North America. Papers should be
comparative. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: anti-terror
legislation; gender-related legislation; government of dissent and the policing of
protests; privatisation plans, private-public partnerships (PPP) and urban
government; the management of international events (Olympic Games, Qatar 2020, Expo,
etc.

7. Panel: "Muslims, Jews, Moriscos, Renegades, Conversos and Christians: Conflictual
Encounters, Conversions, and Exchange in the Early-Modern Habsburg Empire" at the
2015 MESA Meeting, Denver Colorado, 21-25 November 2015

The Mediterranean sea and its coasts during the XVI and XVII centuries are the arena
of religious and political conflicts and negotiations. This panel will explore
sixteenth-century representations of conversions and encounters between Christians,
Jews and Muslims. Papers may consider themes such as piracy, conversion, Moriscos
and Conversos, Mediterranean lingua franca, and polemical treatises.

8. Project Manager for the Regional Project "Shared Prosperity in the MENA Region",
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung

The three-year project consists of a series of conferences on economic and social
policy issues to be convened in different countries in the MENA region. The project
manager will work as a free lancer approximately 20 hours per week for a duration of
22 months (March 2015-Dec. 2016t)
Tasks: Conduct research on economic, social and energy-related topics; Mapping of
experts and research institutes in the MENA region; Proof reading publications in
Arabic and English etc. Requirements: Professional background in economics (M.A. or
PhD candidate); Proficiency in Arabic and English etc.

9. Lecturer in Middle Eastern Studies at the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, Lund
University

This is a full-time position. Preferred starting August 2015. The candidate must
hold a PhD or equivalent international degree within a relevant field in the
humanities or social sciences. The applicant to this position must be able to
demonstrate: A) Broad expertise in Middle Eastern societies, conditions and cultural
processes in general. B) Documented, specialized knowledge of the specific research
areas based on fieldwork experience in the Middle East. C) Teaching and advising
experience. D) Expert proficiency in one or several Middle Eastern languages; etc.

10. One-year Visiting Assistant Professorship - Medieval Mediterranean, Whitman
College, WA, Newzealand

Applications are welcomed from scholars with research interests in medieval southern
Europe, the Byzantine Empire, or the Islamic World to 1453. Preference will be given

The Woolf Institute, which specialises in the study of relations between Jews,

Chinese, Arabic or Persian, Hebrew University of Jerusalem

The European Research Council (ERC)  project "Mobility, Empire and Cross-Cultural
Contacts in Mongol Eurasia" is looking  for outstanding candidates with a sound
knowledge of the history of the Mongol Empire. The successful candidates will take
part in a team work, which creates a prosopographical database of people active
under Mongol rule, and can use the  accumulated data for their own research.

14. Spring Edition of the Media Arabic Webclass: Online Training of Speaking and
Listening Comprehension Skills 

The University of Zürich's Asia-Orient-Institute offers an intensive web based
course in Media Arabic. In small groups and guided by experienced Arabic teachers
from European and Arab Universities, students focus on training their speaking and
listening comprehension skills of Modern Standard Arabic as spoken in Arab TV
reports and talk shows. It is designed for PhD students, scholars, journalists, and
diplomats etc. with a sound theoretical knowledge of Standard Arabic who wish to
become fluent in Arabic in an academic or media environment.
